چکیده مقاله:

Aims of the Study: The aim of this study was to determine the amount of lignin degradation and biodegradation of organic matter and change of biomass under compost and vermicomposting of sewage sludge. Materials & Methods: Sawdust was added to sewage sludge at 1:3 weight bases to Carbon to Nitrogen ratio of 25:1 for composting or vermicomposting. Lignin and volatile solids were determined at different periods, of 0, 10, 30, 40 and 60 days of composting or vermicomposting period to determine the biodegradation of lignocellulose to lignin. Results were expressed as mean of two replicates and the comparisons among means were made using the least significant difference test calculated (p <0.05). Results: After 60 days of experiment period, the initial lignin increased from 3.46% to 4.48% for compost and 3.46% to 5.27% for vermicompost. Biodegradation of lignocellulose was very slow in compost and vermicompost processes. Vermicomposting is a much faster process than compost to convert lignocellulose to lignin (p <0.05). Conclusions: The organic matter losses in sewage sludge composting and vermicomposting are due to the degradation of the lignin fractions. By increasing compost age, the amount of volatile solids will decrease.

Stability and Kinetic Analysis during Vermicomposting of Sewage Sludge

The present study is aimed at alteration of sewage sludge into stable compost product using vermicomposting of sewage sludge mixed with cattle manure and saw dust in five different proportions based on C/N ratios (C/N 15 (R1), 20 (R2), 25 (R3) and 30 (R4); and control (R5)) by employing an epigeic earthworm Eisenia fetida. Higher reductions in C/N ratio, CO2 evolution and OUR were observed in R...

Vermicomposting of cow dung, kitchen waste and sewage sludge with bagasse using Eisenia fetida

The sugar cane industry produces significant amounts of cane trash and bagasse. Inappropriate disposal of agro-wastes can lead to environmental problems. Converting wastes such as cane trash and bagasse (Bg) to a fertilizer and conditioner is the aim of sustainable waste management in sugar cane industry. Cow dung (CD), kitchen waste (KW), and sewage sludge (SS) were mixed with bagasse as amend...

Variations of metal distribution in sewage sludge composting.

In the study, the variations of heavy metal distributions (of Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn) during the sewage sludge composting process were investigated by sequential extraction procedures. The total content of Cu and Zn in the composted mixture increased after the composting process. Mn and Zn were mainly found in mobile fractions (exchangeable fraction (F1), carbonate fraction (F2), and Fe/Mn oxide fr...

Effect of temperature on composting of sewage sludge.

The effect of temperature on the composting reaction of sewage sludge was investigated at 50, 60, and 70 degrees C. The total amount of CO(2) evolved and the final conversion of volatile matter were maximum at 60 degrees C., suggesting that the optimal temperature for composting was around 60 degrees C. The specific CO(2) evolution rate (moles of CO(2) evolved per hour per viable cell) was maxi...

The Agronomic Value of The Sewage Sludge of Tenerife. Composting

One of the most effective ways of recycling the organic and mineral fractions of sludge from the treatment of domestic wastewater is to compost the sludge with the organic fraction of domestic refuse. In the present study, a compost on a semi-industrial scale was obtained from a mixture of domestic refuse and sewage sludge. The evolution of the different parameters throughout the process was no...

Effect of seeding during thermophilic composting of sewage sludge.

The effect of seeding on the thermophilic composting of sewage sludge was examined by measuring the changes in CO2 evolution rates and microbial numbers. Although the succession of thermophilic bacteria and thermophilic actinomycetes clearly reflected the effect of seeding, no clear difference was observed in the overall rate of composting or quality of the composted product.
